Ukraine (Ukr. Ukraine [ukrenojin EN]) is a state in Eastern Europe. The population according to the results of the 2001 census was 48 240 902 permanent residents[19] and 48 457 102 people of the available population[20], according to the state statistics service of Ukraine as of November 1, 2017 — 42 248 598 permanent residents and 42 418 235 people of the available population[9][10], the territory within the constitutional structure[8] of the country — 603 549 km2, while part of its authorities of Ukraine de facto is not controlled. Occupies 32nd place in the world in terms of population, 44th in area. Ukraine is the second largest state in Europe.
Capital — Kiev. The state language is Ukrainian; also at different levels the status of regional languages, languages of national minorities and some others is officially fixed.
Ukraine is a unitary state and a parliamentary-presidential Republic. Since June 7, 2014 Petro Poroshenko holds a post of the President. Prime Minister of Ukraine — Volodymyr Groisman (from April 14, 2016). The country is divided into 27 administrative-territorial units, 24 of which are regions, 1 is an Autonomous Republic[17] and 2 are cities of state subordination (Kiev, Sevastopol[17]).
It borders Belarus in the North, Poland, Slovakia and Hungary — in the West, Romania and Moldova — in the South-West, Russia in the East and North-East. In the South and South-East is washed by the Black and Azov seas, has Maritime borders with Romania in the Black sea and with Russia in the Black and Azov.
The majority of believers profess Orthodoxy.
The volume of GDP for 2016, calculated at purchasing power parity (PPP) amounted to 353 billion US dollars (8272 US dollar per capita)[12]. The country’s independence from the Soviet Union, the Federal Republic of which Ukraine has been since December, 1922, proclaimed on 24 August 1991. The successor of the state-national traditions and the successor of the UNR[21], the state-successor of the USSR, co-rights holder of the USSR under international treaties[22] [K 1], co-founder of the UN, CIS, GUAM, BSEC and other international organizations, is in Association with the European Union.
