1. How many Earth’s resources do people consume nowadays? What are they?
2. What is the result of this consumption?
3. What are the most reasonable ways of solving the problem of ravening resources?
Earth suffers as we gobble up resources
ALMOST one-quarter of natures resources are being gobbled up by a single species, and its not difficult to guess which one. Based on figures for the year 2000, the most recent available, humans appropriate 24 per cent of the Earths production capacity that would otherwise have gone to nature.
The result is a gradual depletion of species and habitats as we take more of their resources for ourselves. Things could get even worse if we grow more plants like palm oil and rapeseed for biofuels to ease our reliance on fossil fuels.
That is the message from a team led by Helmut Haberl of Klagenfurt University in Vienna, Austria. Haberl and colleagues analysed UN Food and Agriculture Organization data on agricultural land use in 161 countries covering 97,4 per cent of farmland. By comparing carbon consumption through human activity with the amount of carbon consumed overall, Haberls team found that humans use some 15.6 trillion kilograms of carbon annually. Half was soaked up by growing crops. Another 7 per cent went up in smoke as fires lit by humans, and the rest was used up in a variety of other ways "Things could get even worse if we grow more plants like palm oil and rapeseed for biofuels to ease our reliance on fossil fuels" related to industrialisation, such as transport [Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences].
Haberl says that the Earth can just about cope if we meet future needs by producing food more efficiently. This could be done by intensifying agriculture on roughly the same amount of land as we use now. But were asking for trouble, he says, if we expand production of biofuels, as the only fertile land available is tropical rainforests.
"If we want full-scale replacement of fossil fuels by biofuels, this would have dramatic implications for ecosystems," says Haberl. He warns that some projections foresee four or fivefold increases in biofuel production. "This would at least double the overall amount of biomass harvested, which is about 30 per cent above ground at present, but would increase to 40 or 50 per cent to meet these biofuel targets," he says.
This would mean clearing what remains of the worlds rainforests in countries such as Brazil and Argentina. As well as wiping out thousands of species, this would have devastating effects on the climate, he says. Unlike farmland, forests help to seed rainfall because they have high evaporation rates.
"The less evaporation there is, the less rainfall there is and the whole system dries up," he says. Andy Coghlan

Most businessmen will agree that good news comes over phone and bad news appears in their mail box. When you write a business letter you have to weight many aspects of the situation. You have to consider ways to organize your letter effectively and to maintain positive and productive customers relations.
A positive answer to an inquiry about a particular product might include such particulars as cost and availability. Also, there must be a range of products available or a process by which the product has to be purchased. In an effective conclusion to such a letter you should try to build a relationship that will lead to good feelings about your company and in some cases, future business. Saying “ no”, which is always difficult in person, is easier in a letter. But when your company rejects a request made by a customer, you have to remember that future business and the company’s image are on stake. The wording and approach have to be careful. A conclusion to such a letter should suggest a willingness on the part of the refuser to continue doing business with the reader ( the customer). A mild statement of regret or a sincere good will wish might be appropriate.

USA AGRICULTURE(1)
Nearly 400 years ago European colonists came to America. The colonists began to settle. They cleared the land and transformed forests into croplands and pastures. The settlers lived in a group of houses around a central field. Here grazed the village cattle.
In 1862 the government gave land away free. A settler had to clear it, build a house and live there for at least five years. There appeared family farms. Over time, farming methods and farming areas increased. Today the average farm in the USA comprises 187 ha (462 acres). American farms became more efficient. Many farms adopted new technologies. Computers helped them to improve productivity and cut costs. In the 1990s American farmers invested more than $ 400 billion in land, livestock, buildings and equipment. American consumers pay less for their food than the people of many other industrial countries. By the mid-1970s a single farmer could grow enough food to feed himself, 45 other Americans and 8 foreigners.
Most of the farms in the USA are family farms. Only 3 percent of them are led by corporations that are owned by families. People who have small pieces of land cannot invest in the modern equipment. Often they sell their land to other farmers. There are tenant farmers who rent this land for cash or give the owner a part of the crops they grow. Owners of large farms hire seasonal workers. Many of these seasonal workers travel from farm to farm. They stay only for the period of picking crops. They are known as migrant workers. The USA is divided into six main regions.
The Northeast region does not have large areas of good land. But you can find dairy and poultry farms in several areas. Maine is famous for potatoes
The Great Lakes region is also an important area for farming. Corn, wheat and dairy products are the most important agricultural items. Farmers often rotate soybeans — that is, planting corn in a field one year and soybeans the next. The region has enough rainfall, which is very important for hay, grown to feed dairy cattle. Wisconsin is the most important dairy state in the region.

2.How did the settlers live?
3.When and how did family farm appear?
4.How do American farmer improve productivity?

VIOLENCE BREEDS VIOLENCE
Nowadays the number of crimes involving violence is growing in almost all countries in the world. The main cause of this development is undoubtedly the use of drugs especially in large cities. The higher rate of unemployment and growing racism are significant reasons too. Meaningless murders and assaults are the frightening results. Nowadays we can see how people not only in countries like the United States, but also in countries like Sweden, arm themselves with weapons for protection, but violence breeds violence.
It is often claimed that an efficient way to lower the number of acts of violence is to have more sever sentences. However, people who commit these crimes often have serious social and psychological problems. Many of them may therefore be indifferent to how severe the sentences are. Besides, these criminals do not think that they will ever get caught. Because of these reasons, there is a doubt that acts of violence will decrease if the governments make the sentences for this type of crime more severe.
A common measure to reduce the acts of violence is to increase the number of policemen patrolling the streets. Although this is a good way of preventing acts of violence, it will not actually stop people from becoming criminals.
Some people are convinced that it is impossible to erase the violence related criminality completely, but there is a way in which it can be reduced considerably. Children should be informed about crimes related to violence and drugs. This information should be given in kindergarten as well as in elementary school. Furthermore, it should especially reach those children who live in areas with high crime rates. The information should take the form of a discussion, not a lecture, led by some expert, preferably a local police officer.
Hopefully, the children would then at an early age already have some understanding of these problems that would be valuable to them for the rest of their lives. Although the costs for such a project would be considerable, the benefits would be great. It would certainly prevent many from becoming violent criminals in the future.
