Columbus was the first of the authentically known travelers to cross the Atlantic Ocean in the subtropical and tropical belt of the northern hemisphere and the first Europeans to walk in the Caribbean Sea and in the Sargasso Sea [7]. He discovered and initiated the exploration of South and Central America, including their continental parts and the nearby archipelagos of Greater Antilles (Cuba, Haiti, Jamaica and Puerto Rico), the Lesser Antilles (from Dominica to the Virgin Islands, and Trinidad) and the Bahamas.
